Protection of the water supply from contamination is the responsibility of the water supplier. Backflow preventers help ensure this is conducted, so proper operation and maintenance of these devices is required. Backflow preventers shall be tested at least annually or more frequently if determined to be necessary by the health agency or water supplier.
The Backflow Program consists of board members that are appointed by the Board of Supervisors.

How to Become a Certified Backflow Prevention Device Tester

American California/Nevada Water Works Association (AWWA) Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification is the only method you can recertify for our backflow prevention program. Proof of current AWWA Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification shall be required along with valid color copy of California issued identification or driver’s license. For more information on how to obtain the certification, visit the AWWA California/Nevada Section website.

  • New certification cards will be issued to applicants that complete the steps above.
  • You can become certified during any time period.  No longer quarterly.
  • Certification is valid up to 3 years.

Please be advised that the certificate holder shall bear the responsibility of ensuring all required licensures and certificates are kept current. Should any of these lapse, the Riverside County Backflow Device Tester Certificate issued to the certificate holder shall be rendered null and void.
